Favorites: Music and poetry

I'm looking for your favorite poets. I love writing poetry, but I must admit I haven't read poetry, other than people's blogs or in poetry groups, since I was forced to read it in High School and college. So when I was asked, "Who is your favorite poet", I was a little embarrassed when I couldn't come up with one. I started to just say Maya Angelou, but I didn't want to get caught in any lies when I was asked which poem I liked the best or to recite a line or two. So I said, "Jill Scott". What? She's a poet. But let me know about your favorite famous and infamous poets, so that I too may find my own favorite poet.

Also, I'm looking for some good love music to add to my play list; something to read to. I got a few of my favorites on there, but I want the readers to have something on there they can read to. So let me know.

One more thing, is it true that when it comes to poetry, our generation, can't get pass the hood life? That we equate poetry to rap? Which leads me to another question, is rap poetry?

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS.

I think some rap music can be equated to poetry. Some things written by certain artist like Pac, Common, Talib, Mos Def, Lupe and others are very poetic in nature. Not all, just some.

I am more of a spoken word type. I love Spoken Word poetry and I think my form of poetry reflects that. With that said, Black Ice is probably my favorite poet. And Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni are close.

Joy Denalane, Raheem Devaughn, some old school R&B singers, Teedra Moses, Jazmine Sullivan, Kem, Levert, etc....check their songs out. Even Prince. I was tripping when I saw that you had Snoop's Gin & Juice playing. I was like..."Obama Mama is gangster!"

Hum...good question. I do believe that rap can be poetry because the art of rapping involves metaphors, symmetry and other nmeonics. However, only few have been able to successfully bring about such transformation (Nas, Lupe,Common, Mos Def--to name a few).

Favorite poets--I would have to agree with Don. I love Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni. I also love Pablo Neruda, E.E. Cummings and Alice Walker. Of course, Maya will always ring true.

I think rap is poetic but not poetry unless there is meaning behind what they are saying... you cant have poetry about bling and bitches and hoes unless it has a message or purposes... pac was a poet first and an artist second... he would write to no beat at all... some rappers cant create unless they have a beat playing
