black poetry vs. other poetry

On my quest to learn more about what I do, poetry, flow or whatever you wanna call it, I have some questions? Is there a difference between black poetry and lets say white poetry? Is black poetry its own genre, and if it is should it be? Do we black people bring a different funk to poetry? Or is my writing, and others who write like me, even poetry?

I think black poetry (spoken word I think you refer to) has more soul and spirit involved than 'widely accepted prose.'

I could be wrong though.

I think "black poetry" in all it's forms (written, spoken, hip-hop, rap, r&B, etc) is just another way for us to express ourselves. It goes without saying that for the VAST majority of time blacks have existed in what we now call the USA; our voices have not been heard. Our prayers not answered. Made ignorant by design and not by choice. So I think that's why we tend to be so creative in the things we do.

So yes I think it is different. My reality is mine because of what I have learned from my family and stories passed down through generations. Well only five generations ago, on my mothers and fathers side, my people were slaves in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina.

That's something that is unique to blacks in America. It's hard for one to not understand if you don't have that same type of history. History that can be depressing to even learn.
